What We Look At During Dental Exams

It's a comprehensive health check for your mouth and a vital part of your overall oral care. Think of it as a pit stop for your smile, where we make sure everything is running smoothly and catch any potential problems before they become bigger issues. We focus on prevention dentistry, aiming to keep your mouth healthy for the long haul. Here's a closer look at what we're checking during these important appointments:

Teeth, Teeth, Teeth!

Of course, we start by carefully examining each tooth. We're not just looking for cavities! We are checking for:

•  Decay: We use visual inspection, dental instruments, and sometimes X-rays to identify any signs of tooth decay, even in the early stages. Early detection means smaller, less invasive treatment.
•  Cracks and Fractures: Tiny cracks, often invisible to the naked eye, can weaken teeth and lead to pain or even breakage. We look for these using magnification and special lighting.
•  Wear: Grinding or clenching your teeth, a condition known as bruxism, can cause excessive wear and tear. We assess the amount of wear and discuss ways to manage it.
•  Fillings and Restorations: We check the condition of any existing fillings, crowns, or other restorations to ensure they are still properly sealed and functioning correctly. Damaged or leaking restorations can allow bacteria to enter and cause decay.

Gum Health is Key

Healthy gums are the foundation of a healthy mouth. We carefully evaluate your gum tissue for signs of:

•  Gingivitis: This is an early stage of gum disease characterized by red, swollen, and bleeding gums. It's often reversible with good oral hygiene and professional cleanings.
•  Periodontitis: This is a more advanced form of gum disease that can damage the bone and tissues that support your teeth. We measure the pockets around your teeth to assess the severity of any gum disease.
•  Recession: We check to see if your gums are pulling back, exposing more of your tooth. Gum recession can make your teeth sensitive and more susceptible to decay.

Your Bite Matters

How your teeth come together when you bite, called your occlusion, is important. We evaluate your bite for:

•  Misalignment: Overbites, underbites, and crossbites can contribute to jaw pain, headaches, and tooth wear.
•  Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) Disorders: We assess the function of your jaw joints, looking for signs of clicking, popping, or pain, which could indicate a TMJ disorder.
•  Grinding or Clenching: As mentioned before, we look for signs of bruxism, which can impact your bite and overall oral health.

Soft Tissue Check

The dental exam isn't just about teeth and gums! We also examine the soft tissues in your mouth, including:

•  Tongue: We look for any abnormalities, such as sores, lumps, or changes in color or texture.
•  Cheeks and Lips: We check for any signs of oral cancer, such as ulcers, white or red patches, or unusual growths.
•  Throat: We examine the back of your throat for any abnormalities.

Oral Cancer Screening

This is a crucial part of every dental exam. We visually and manually examine your mouth and surrounding tissues for any signs of oral cancer. Early detection is key to successful treatment.

Regular dental exams are a vital part of maintaining a healthy mouth and a beautiful smile. By understanding what we're looking for during these appointments, you can be an active participant in your oral care and work with us to prevent problems before they start.
